Checking your car brake fluid will ensure that your car has the stopping and slowing power that it needs at the precise moment when it needs it. It is critical to maintain your brakes as part of your routine car care process, preferable checking on a monthly basis. To appropriately maintain your brakes, an essential part of brake maintenance is checking the brake fluid. This should be checked at least monthly. Prior to checking your brake filter you need to find your master cylinder reservoir, this is where the fill hole is located, in most cars it will be near the top of the engine. Open the master cylinder lid. Check the brake fluid level and check if there are any leaks occurring near or around the master cylinder reservoir or any other visible leaks or cracks through the hoses or other parts of the brake system. If you do need to refill your brake fluid, do not fill past the fill line in the reservoir or more than is required for your make and model of vehicle. If replacing your brake fluid is to complicated or if other parts of your brake system need replaced, then you should probably opt to simply bring your car to a local repair shop and bear the expense of having a certified car repair mechanic repair your brakes and fill your brake fluid, as the fluid and air will need to be flushed out of the entire brake system, of which professional repair shops have readily available.
If you chose to check and add brake fluid yourself, as needed. Then following the steps mentioned above, check the brake fluid level and, after purchasing the correct type and amount for your specific vehicle, add the fluid into the master cylinder. To completely change the brake fluid and filter yourself, follow the following instructions: Remove the old filter from the master cylinder reservoir. Then, using a good lint free cloth, clean the inside of the reservoir, by wiping it clean. Remember the cloth you use must be lint free, such as micro fiber towels. Lint left behind can clog or damage brake lines or the brake system. Pour the new brake fluid into the reservoir to the ‘fill’ line. Now you have correctly applied good car care to check your brakes. For ‘bleeding your brakes’ it’s recommended that you take your car to a car repair shop, where the professionals have the appropriate tools necessary for performing this more complicated task You May Also Like: Low Brake Fluid Signs

checking the Oil:
Before you begin to check your oil level, first ensure that your car is parked on a level area. It’s more accurate to check the oil in a car whose engine is cold, and safer from burning yourself as well. (Though some car manufacturers recommend checking the oil on a warm engine, check your owners manual or with the manufacturer before checking on a cold engine.) Open the cars hood and locate the oil dipstick. With a cloth or napkin, wipe the dipstick clean. After it is cleaned, replace the dipstick completely into the engine and once again remove the dipstick. Look at both sides of the end o the dipstick. There will be markings on the bottom end of the dipstick that will tell you how much motor oil is in the engine or if you need to add more. Remember to check your motor oil often as this is a very crucial fluid for appropriate performance and critical to your car care routine and will help you to avoid car repair expenses later. Adding More Oil: Oil comes in a variety of ‘grades’. Check with the owners’ manual to know the appropriate oil grade for your cars engine. If you are unable to locate this information, your local car repair and parts shop can assist. The experts there can let you know the grade and weight of oil you need and sell you the amount you need as well. Once you have the appropriate oil for your car, remove the oil filter cap, which is typically found at the top of the engine. Use of a funnel will help you to avoid spilling the oil. It is recommended that you only add ¼ to ½ of a quart of oil at a time. Wait for a few minutes and then recheck the oil level once again. Add more oil as needed, be careful not to overfill as this can causer damage to your cars engine. Also when checking your oil, you should check the color. Dark brown or lack is normal colors for motor oil. But if your oil appears whitish or lighter color, this could be a warning that coolant or antifreeze is leaking into the oil or if any water is noticeable you should have your car towed (not driven) to a repair shop for professional repair and analysis. If you notice the color is fine and the level is fine, then you can replace the oil filter cap and consider your oil check for your car care complete. |
